Best Baby Monitors – How to Choose the Right One

With so many baby monitors on the market in 2019, it can be hard deciding which one is right for you. Thankfully, we’ve done the hard work. We’ve compared and researched a variety of products and selected only the best baby monitors for you to choose from.

How to choose the right baby monitor

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a baby monitor.

Firstly, how much are you prepared to spend? Baby monitors can vary dramatically in price, with basic models starting at £20 and higher-end models costing over £100.

Secondly, which type of baby monitor would you prefer? Audio monitors are great for alerting you of any noise, but would you like to see your baby, too? In that case, either a video or WiFi monitor may be the better choice.

Video baby monitors (such as the HelloBaby HB32) will have a camera on the baby unit and a screen on the parent unit. Most have night vision to let you see when the room is dark. Alternatively, if you have an Android smartphone or iOS device (iPhone or iPad), WiFi monitors are worth considering.

WiFi baby monitors (such as the DMZOK WiFi Camera) let you stream video from the camera in your baby’s room direct to your smartphone. No matter where you are, you can check on your baby as long as you have an internet connection. Multiple smartphones can be paired with the same camera so that access can be shared. The camera will even send you push notifications when movement is detected.

Breathing monitors are also available. They’ll alert you if no movement is detected for 20 seconds by sounding an alarm. We highly recommend one for extra peace of mind, as they have been known to save lives.

Which are the best baby monitors?

We’ve split the best baby monitors into categories and summarised our findings. Whatever your requirements, there will be one that’s right for you.

Best Audio Baby Monitors

Audio baby monitors aren’t expensive and will let you hear any murmurs or cries coming from your baby’s room.

BT Digital Audio Baby Monitor 400

This BT baby monitor is one of the best baby monitors available

Our Top Choice Audio Baby Monitor

The BT Digital Audio Baby Monitor 400 is a fine choice if you’re looking for a basic model with a rechargeable parent unit.

BT claim that this is their most compact baby monitor, with crystal clear sound and LEDs to give you a visual representation of the sound coming from your baby’s room.

It has a long range of 300m outdoors and 50m indoors, which should suffice for most homes. Rechargeable batteries are included for the parent unit, along with two power adapters.

Customer Reviews

Customer reviews are very positive, showing that for the price, this monitor performs very well.

“It’s compact, crystal clear and has great sound.”

“Works really well through solid stone walls. The range is more than adequate for us and the signal was crystal clear. Cannot fault this for the price!”

“Really good. Works in my three storey townhouse. Very clear sound. Small and light design. No complaints.”

Our Verdict

At £27, this BT baby monitor is one of the best baby monitors around as it does exactly what it says on the tin while providing outstanding value for money.

Motorola MBP8 Audio Baby Monitor

The Motorola MBP8 Audio Baby Monitor (£20) is a great choice if you don’t need a rechargeable parent unit and want something that works straight out of the box.

The Motorola MBP8 is one of the best audio baby monitors

Our Top Budget Audio Baby Monitor

Currently one of Amazon’s best sellers, this is one of the cheapest baby monitors on the market. If you don’t need video, this could be perfect to get you started.

The setup process is extremely easy – simply plug both the parent and baby units into a power socket.

The parent unit has both a speaker and LEDs to show you how much sound is coming from your baby’s room. The range is 50m (admittedly shorter than more expensive monitors) and you will be alerted should the unit be outside of that.

Unfortunately, as both units have to be plugged in, you can’t carry the monitor around with you.

The baby unit has a nightlight and a high-sensitivity microphone to ensure the quietest of murmurs are picked up.

For added peace of mind, you could use this product in conjunction with the Nanny Baby Sensor Breathing Monitor (see below).

Customer Reviews

With over 1,000 positive reviews on Amazon, this is a clear winner.

“Perfect for what we needed. Plugs into the mains so no need to recharge. We have loved them about the house and never had a problem with them connects automatically. Sound is very clear and the led also indicates the slightest noise, even if they’re just wriggling round.”

“Easy to use, good volume and reach. Just plug both ends in to the mains and you can hear louder than if you were in the room (can turn in down). Stayed in an old mill house and it had better reach than any of the other monitors our friends were using!”

“Love it. Basic baby monitor, but does a great job! 5 volume settings on parent unit and a night light on the baby unit. Beeps if baby unit is off, but parent unit on which is a good feature.”

Our Verdict

If you’re looking for one of the best baby monitors available, this Motorola baby monitor will suit you perfectly.

BT Digital Audio Baby Monitor 450 Lightshow

BT Digital Audio Baby Monitor 450 Lightshow

A Great All-Round Audio Baby Monitor

The BT Digital Audio Baby Monitor 450 Lightshow (£45) is an excellent all-round baby monitor, with some great features.

In line with its predecessor, it delivers crystal clear sound over a range of 300m outdoors and 50m indoors, and has LED sound level indicators on the rechargeable parent unit (batteries are included).

This model also features a temperature display on the parent unit and two-way talk back, allowing you to talk directly to your baby. The baby unit has an adjustable nightlight, though some users have commented that it’s not as bright as they would like.

The Star and Moon Lightshow projects subtle coloured shapes onto your baby’s ceiling while playing a lullaby (there are 18 to choose from). What is usually seen as a gimmick, customer feedback has actually been largely positive. For it to be truly effective, the room has to be dark so that images can be seen clearly.

Customer Reviews

Many parents are happy with this baby monitor:

“Great monitor for the price. Good clear sound. We use night light and star show all the time. When testing it before the baby arrived I thought the lightshow didn’t work but when it’s very dark it’s lovely and clear. I like that you can change the music and light show from the parent monitor.”

“Really happy with it. Love the fact that it’s a two way intercom; this was the main reason for purchase and didn’t disappoint. Star projector is also awesome.”

“So many features and such good value for money! Would definitely recommend.”

Our Verdict

The BT Digital Audio Baby Monitor 450 Lightshow is a nice upgrade from its little brother. The temperature sensor and two-way talk are welcome additions that make this a great audio baby monitor.

At £45, it is on the expensive side for an audio only monitor. We therefore suggest checking out the WiFi monitors below.

Best WiFi Baby Monitors

WiFi baby monitors are brilliant if you’d like to monitor your baby via your smartphone. They offer great value for money, as well as peace of mind, so we’ve recommended two of the best baby monitors that you can link to your phone.

Swinway 360

The Swinway 360 is the best WiFi baby monitor and one of the best baby monitors

The Best WiFi Baby Monitor

The Swinway 360 (£40) makes keeping an eye on your baby so easy and is the best WiFi baby monitor. If you have a smartphone, this could be the baby monitor for you.

Simply plug in the camera in your baby’s room and download the app on your Android or iOS device.

The app will let you stream video from the camera in real-time, from wherever you are in the world.

The camera has a 1080p HD resolution with night vision, giving clear video both during the day and at night. Thanks to its speaker, two-way talk lets you talk to your baby via your smartphone.

With its audio and motion detection, if your baby starts to cry, a notification will be sent to your phone immediately.

Access isn’t limited to one smartphone. You can share access so that both you and your partner can check on your baby.

The camera has a magnetic base so it can be easily attached to any metal surface. With a wide viewing angle of 150 degrees, you can see more of your baby’s room. You can also zoom in on the video.

A key advantage of this camera is that it doesn’t just have to be used for monitoring your baby. You could also use it for keeping an eye on your home while you’re on holiday, or for checking on your pets when you’re out.

If you’d like to record video for later viewing, be sure to pick up an SD card too.

Customer Reviews

This baby monitor has overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon:

“I love these cameras! We decided to monitor our baby and we couldn’t be happier. Great quality, the app is fast and convenient, we also like the two-way microphone. Awesome value and an amazing product!”

“So far this has been great. Quality of picture, packaging and software appears to be much better than expected for such a cheap camera. Only just getting going with this as Baby is yet to arrive – so can’t comment on the crying alerts etc.. But impressed so far!”

“This is a fantastic camera, much better than others I have had. The pan and zoom feature is awesome. The quality of the video is incredible. Out of the box setup on iPhone was so simple.”

Our Verdict

Keeping an eye on your baby with your smartphone couldn’t be easier. Not only are the reviews phenomenal, it’s currently a bargain at £40, down from £130. We firmly believe it’s one of the best baby monitors available in the UK.

DMZOK Wireless Baby Monitor

One of the best baby monitors

A Great WiFi Baby Monitor

The DMZOK Wireless Baby Monitor (£50) is another great choice if you’d like to keep an eye on your baby via your smartphone.

Like the Swinway 360, you can set this camera up in a few minutes by plugging it in and downloading the Android or iOS app.

The camera has a full 1080p HD resolution with night vision, giving clear video both during the day and at night.

It also has a built-in speaker so that you can talk to your baby via your smartphone.

The app lets you stream video from the camera in real-time, from wherever you are in the world. If you wish to record video, you’ll need an SD card too.

If your baby starts crying, the intelligent motion detection will send a notification to your phone immediately.

You can pair the camera with as many smartphones as you like. This means that both you and your partner can check on your baby.

With a wide viewing angle of 350 degrees horizontally and 100 degrees vertically, you can cover almost the whole of your baby’s room. You can also zoom in on the video.

A camera like this doesn’t have to be used solely for monitoring your baby. For example, you could also use it for keeping an eye on your home while you’re on holiday, or for checking on your pets when you’re out.

Customer Reviews

Customer reviews have been very positive so far:

“Cracking little camera, compact, night mode works excellent, Movement of the camera is smooth and the operation is really simple.”

“I am extremely pleased with this purchase. The quality of the camera is very detailed and can be zoomed in for extra detailing. It can rotate to any angle which makes it extra handy. I use it as a baby monitor and have found it so useful. I am able to communicate to my child through pressing a button and he can hear me through the camera. It was very easy to connect to my phone too. I would recommend this to all.”

“Excellent piece of kit. Smile to use, effective and a doddle to set up! Recommended to somebody else who has already purchased one!”

Our Verdict

This wireless baby monitor makes it so easy to keep an eye on your child with your smartphone. It’s currently priced at £50 (down from £130), making it a bargain purchase and one of the best baby monitors around. If you’re keen to use your smartphone as a baby monitor, we’d recommend either this or the Swinway 360, as both are very similar.

Best Video Baby Monitors

Alternatively, video baby monitors can also work really well, though they can be more expensive.

HelloBaby HB32

The HelloBaby HB32 is the best video baby monitor

Our Top Choice Video Baby Monitor

The HelloBaby HB32 Wireless Video Baby Monitor (£90) is the best video baby monitor that we have seen, based on features and reviews.

The monitor features a 3.2″ LCD screen for both audio and video streaming over a private wireless connection.

In VOX mode, the monitor can be activated automatically when sound is detected in the baby’s room, saving battery life.

A key advantage of this product is its two-way audio, enabling you to talk back to your baby. You can also choose from eight lullabies to help soothe your baby to sleep.

The monitor can be used in audio-only mode and has 2x digital zoom, should you wish to get a closer view of your baby.

The camera unit can be rotated and tilted to suit your baby’s position in the room. Note this isn’t rechargeable (unlike the monitor, which includes a rechargeable battery) and so needs to be plugged in.

Infrared sensors are included in the camera so that you can see your baby clearly, even in the dark. The temperature in the baby’s room is also monitored.

Alarms can be triggered when the room is too cold or too hot, when the battery is low, and when there is no signal, though an operating range of 300m should suffice for most homes.

One monitor and one camera are included in the box, though the monitor can be paired with up to four cameras.

Customer Reviews

As with all the products we recommend, this has many happy users, with lots of positive reviews on Amazon.

“It’s awesome. Big screen and a nice solid control unit in general. Image is clear and transmits well through my house where wifi struggles to get through two storeys. All the other bits and bobs like playing lullabies and speaking to baby work just fine but for me video/audio monitoring was the top priority and it delivers!”

“Really happy with this product. Big, clear screen. Nice features. Easy to use and set-up. Clear signal without any loss.”

“Great video monitor. Easy to use and good picture and sound! Much better value than big name brands and seems to do the same! Happy with my purchase! Delivered quickly too.”

Our Verdict

Although it’s not one of the cheapest baby monitors, this is arguably the best video baby monitor currently available in the UK in 2019.

Best Movement Baby Monitors

We’ve also selected a couple of baby monitors that monitor breathing.

Angelcare AC401 Movement and Sound Baby Monitor

Angelcare AC401 Movement and Sound Baby Monitor

Our Current Top Choice Baby Monitor

With over 1,000 overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon, the Angelcare AC401 Movement and Sound Baby Monitor is our current top choice for baby monitors in 2019.

Not only will it let you hear the quietest sound from your baby, it also monitors movement.

Angelcare’s patented Sensor Pad, when placed under the mattress, will detect the slightest of movement and will alert you if there has been no movement for 20 seconds, providing peace of mind. You can adjust the sensitivity as your baby grows.

The parent unit displays the temperature in your baby’s room and if desired, an alarm can sound if it becomes too high or too low. With a long range of 250m, you’re free to move around your home or garden as you wish. If you happen to step outside of that range, you will be alerted. The monitor can be set to beep periodically to reassure you that your baby’s movements are being monitored during quiet moments, such as while they sleep. Alarms can also be set to vibrate.

The baby unit can act as a soothing nightlight, allowing you to check on your child without disturbing them.

Both units are lightweight, very portable (the parent unit can be clipped to your belt), and take four AAA batteries. Note that only the parent unit is rechargeable, though batteries are included, as is a charging cradle and two AC adapters.

Customer Reviews

Customer reviews for this Angelcare baby monitor speak for themselves:

“This product has saved us SO much worry; the peace of mind it brings is immensely valuable in itself and worth paying the extra for.”

“I’ve been really pleased with the performance of this monitor. The movement monitoring pad works well, and gave me great peace of mind when we moved my son into his own room. It’s great being able to carry the listening unit around the house and the battery lasts a long time. I’ve found the light on the unit to be very useful in the middle of the night, in order to avoid waking either of us up too much, and it’s done everything I would have hoped a monitor would do.”

“Fantastic product, we couldn’t be without it! It provides such good peace of mind when putting baby to bed. Would recommend every expectant parent to purchase this!”

Our Verdict

This feature-packed Angelcare baby monitor is a stellar product that provides huge peace of mind. With both sound and movement monitoring, this is our top choice all-round baby monitor.

Arguably the best baby breathing monitor

Our Top Baby Breathing Sensor Mat

Monitoring your baby’s breathing couldn’t be easier with the Nanny Baby Sensor Breathing Monitor.

This device is medically certified (Class IIb), meaning it has been tested in maternity wards and used by medical professionals to monitor breathing.

A loud alarm will be activated should breathing stop for 20 seconds, or there are less than 10 breaths per minute. The mat has been designed mainly for use in cots and cribs, but can also be used with mattresses under 14cm deep.

The included batteries will last for a considerable amount of time before they need replacing, and you’ll be informed when they do.

It’s worth noting that this product is similar to the Angelcare AC401, which features a separate sound monitor, though it isn’t medically certified.

With over 100 strongly positive reviews on Amazon, many parents highly recommend this, as it could save your child’s life.

“This is simply superb and I highly recommend. You will need a firm base underneath but the peace of mind this device gives is amazing. It is so sensitive it picks up individual breaths. “One of the best purchases I have ever made. So good for me being a first time mum, and a very paranoid one! My baby is almost three weeks so is in his Moses basket and I love the reassurance this provides.”

“Would highly recommend. The sensor pad is really sensitive and has put my mind to rest. Worth the price for baby’s safety.”
